Unit Settings
Configure how speed and distance values are displayed throughout the app.
Accessing Unit Settings
- Go to Settings tab (gear icon)
- Find Units in the settings list
- Tap to open the unit preference dialog
Unit Options
Treadmill Assistant supports three unit preference modes:
Follow Treadmill (Default)
- Matches the unit system displayed on your treadmill's panel
- If treadmill shows km/h, app shows km/h
- If treadmill shows mph, app shows mph
- Recommended setting for consistency with treadmill display
This is the default option and ensures what you see in the app matches what you see on your treadmill.
Always Metric
- Speed always displayed in km/h (kilometers per hour)
- Distance always displayed in km (kilometers)
- Ignores treadmill's unit setting
- Best for: Users who prefer metric regardless of treadmill
Always Imperial
- Speed always displayed in mph (miles per hour)
- Distance always displayed in mi (miles)
- Ignores treadmill's unit setting
- Best for: Users who prefer imperial regardless of treadmill
Where Units Apply
The unit preference affects all speed and distance displays:
- Home screen workout stats
- Program status speed and distance values
- Workout history recorded values
- Segment editor speed inputs
- Program cards speed summaries
- Ad-hoc targets speed picker
Data Storage
All workout data is stored internally in metric units (km/h, km). The unit preference only affects how values are displayed. This ensures:
- Consistent data regardless of display preference
- Accurate conversions when switching units
- No data loss when changing preferences
- Cloud sync works correctly across devices
Changing Unit Preference
- Go to Settings tab
- Tap Units row
- Select your preference:
- Follow treadmill (recommended)
- Always metric (km/h)
- Always imperial (mph)
- Change takes effect immediately throughout the app
When to Use Each Option
Use "Follow Treadmill" When
- You want app and treadmill panel to show same values
- You use treadmills with different unit settings
- You don't have a strong unit preference
- You want the simplest, most intuitive experience
Use "Always Metric" When
- You think in kilometers and km/h
- Your treadmill shows mph but you prefer metric
- You're training for races measured in kilometers
- You're from a country using the metric system
Use "Always Imperial" When
- You think in miles and mph
- Your treadmill shows km/h but you prefer imperial
- You're training for races measured in miles
- You're from a country using the imperial system
Program Editing
When editing workout programs:
- Speed values are entered in your preferred unit
- Internally converted to metric for storage
- Displayed back in your preferred unit
- No precision loss during conversion
For example, if you set "Always Imperial" and enter 6.0 mph: - Stored as 9.66 km/h internally - Displayed as 6.0 mph in the app
Switching Between Units
You can change your unit preference at any time:
- Existing workouts display correctly in new units
- Program speeds show in new units
- No data modification needed
- Instant update across all screens
Unit Conversion Reference
| Metric | Imperial |
|---|---|
| 5 km/h | 3.1 mph |
| 8 km/h | 5.0 mph |
| 10 km/h | 6.2 mph |
| 12 km/h | 7.5 mph |
| 15 km/h | 9.3 mph |
Troubleshooting
Units Not Changing
Problem: Changed setting but values still show in old units
Solutions:
- Navigate away from current screen and back
- Close and reopen the app
- Verify setting was saved in Settings
"Follow Treadmill" Shows Wrong Units
Problem: App shows different units than treadmill panel
Solutions:
- Verify treadmill is connected (unit detection requires connection)
- Some treadmills don't report their unit setting
- Use "Always Metric" or "Always Imperial" as fallback
Values Look Wrong After Conversion
Problem: Converted values seem inaccurate
Note: This is normal due to rounding:
- 10 km/h = 6.21 mph (displayed as 6.2 mph)
- 6.0 mph = 9.66 km/h (displayed as 9.7 km/h)
- Small rounding differences are expected
